Anxiety

There used to be a time when you were asleep the moment your head hit the pillow. You'd wake up refreshed, get ready and leave your front door. But something has happened. Perhaps you're tossing and turning at night, sleep evading, thoughts racing through your mind. Waking up in the morning and facing a new day may instil a feeling of dread or panic and all of the things that used to comprise your daily routine have become a mountain to climb.

This can leave you feeling disempowered and as though you don't have control over your life anymore. You may feel frustrated: you know that you can do all of these things, after all, you've been doing them for years! So you may understandably be wondering why from one day to another you have discovered doing these things have significantly increased in difficulty.

Examples of anxiety include:

  • Feeling unable to relax

  • Panic attacks

  • Palpitations

  • Feelings of dread

  • Spending a lot of time worrying about your situation

  • Intrusive thoughts

  • Tension in the body (tense jaw, tensed muscles)

  • Insomnia

  • New-found fears

  • Avoidance of social situations

  • Irritability

  • Being on high alert (hypervigilance)

You may know when these anxious feelings started, or they may have seemingly come out of nowhere and you don't know what is triggering them. This can leave you in an increasingly anxious and disempowered state, causing you to plan your life and adjust your goals around your anxiety.

Clients coming to me for anxiety have sometimes expressed that they feel like "something is wrong with them" because their mind and body are no longer responding like they used to and are no longer in sync with what they logically know to be a 'safe' situation that they would normally be comfortable with.

Anxiety can be immensely debilitating, but counselling can support you in managing these symptoms and understanding them. In a safe, reliable space we can work on finding the triggers and develop a tool-kit to help you gain more control over your life.
